Serge Gnabry's confidence coming back thanks to Vincent Kompany's 'trust' as Joshua Kimmich says Bayern Munich co-star is thriving in new position

Gnabry’s performance in Bayern’s 3-1 win over Chelsea was another sign of his resurgence this season. After a year hampered by recurring injuries and limited minutes, the German international has re-established himself as a key figure under Kompany. Operating centrally, he linked play with Harry Kane, completing most of his passes and pressing aggressively to create Bayern’s third goal. Kimmich believes the transformation is clear. He pointed to how Gnabry has responded to Kompany’s trust and embraced his new role.

"The coach definitely has the trust, who relies on him and has always relied on him - even after games where things weren't quite so good," Kimmich told Sky. "With Serge, you can see that his confidence is returning, that he's gaining more security. Now he's playing in a different position... You can see that he's becoming more comfortable with finding his space, with being able to contribute his strengths there. He seems very, very free – on and off the pitch. In the end, that's reflected in his performance."

Gnabry’s contract runs until 2026, but Bayern are already weighing up an extension. After a tough 2024-25 season, when fitness problems left his role uncertain, his current form has revived his standing at the club. For his part, Gnabry has left the door open to renewing: “It’s still a while away… I’ll make sure that I continue like this… it’s not out of the question.”

Bayern chairman Dreesen has been equally vocal, praising Gnabry’s performances as a “real joy to watch” and suggesting that his strong start makes a compelling case for extending his stay.

"Serge is in great form. He's had a fantastic season so far. We're only at the beginning, but we all hope he can maintain this form," he said.

Bayern now turn their attention to Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, where Gnabry will again be expected to carry his form forward. With Kompany’s faith, Kimmich’s backing, and the club openly considering fresh terms, the 30-year-old has momentum on his side.
