Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney to sign USMNT star? Wrexham warned off transfer for ‘token’ American amid record-breaking run of success

Hollywood co-owners in North Wales have been piecing together the most ambitious of projects. They have invested heavily since completing a stunning takeover in 2021, with recruitment records being broken on a regular basis.

Those funds have helped to deliver a historic run of three successive promotions, with Wrexham now heading to the Championship. That division is currently graced by United States internationals such as Josh Sargent, Haji Wright, Aidan Morris and Brenden Aaronson.

Quizzed on whether Wrexham should, given their growing popularity, be looking to bring in an American player, ex-USMNT star Herculez Gomez told ESPN FC: “I’m going to say no. And this is why I’m going to say no. If the good people of Wrexham, who TV and understand marketing and understand how to promote things, didn’t see it fit to have - at any level - an American, I don’t think it’s necessary that they have an American now.”

Legendary former USMNT goalkeeper Kasey Keller added: “To me it’s not about the token American. To me it’s about finding the right player. If that right player happens to be American, fine, no problem. I’m not a fan of tokenism at all. I want to see Wrexham, clearly they have had success - there is no issue of thinking: ‘Hey, would this sell a copy more jerseys in California?’ I think they are doing it the right way.”

Wrexham are expected to spend big again in the summer of 2025, after delivering more drama for their award-winning documentary series. It may be that a USMNT star registers on their radar at some stage, but nobody at SToK Racecourse will be forcing that issue any time soon.
