Revealed: How Bayern Munich sensation Jamal Musiala was convinced to snub England and play for Germany

The Bayern Munich star was born in the German city of Fulda and was raised by a Nigerian-British father and German mother. He moved to England at the age of seven, attending the Whitgift School in Croydon, where he spent three years before joining Chelsea's academy ranks on a full-time basis. Due to his connection with both nations, he was eligible to represent either of the national teams in senior international football.

The Blues sold the 21-year-old for a mere £170,000 (€2,03,550) to the Bavarian club in August 2019 and since then he has established himself as one of the best young talents in the Bundesliga. Former Germany boss Joachim Low recently revealed that he had a chat with the youngster and his mother in 2021 after which he decided to snub the Three Lions and represent Germany in international football.

Speaking to Kicker, the World Cup-winning coach said, "Oliver Bierhoff and I went to Munich in the spring of 2021 and talked to him, including his mother of course. He grew up in England, had his friends there and spent his entire youth development there. He was already thinking about whether he wanted to play for England or Germany.

"It was the only time in my time as national team coach that I made a promise to a player: Even though he wasn't a regular at Bayern, I told him that if he chose us, he would definitely be playing at Euro 2021 in the summer."

Low did keep his promise to the attacking midfielder who made his debut in March 2021 before being included in the German squad for Euro 2021. To date, Musiala has earned 37 international caps where he scored seven goals and provided eight assists. He will be next seen in action for Julian Nagelsmann's side on Tuesday night as they play their final Nations League group stage game against Hungary.
