  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arda Guler is currently facing a challenging time at Real Madrid. After his recent performance in the team's 2-1 victory over Villarreal, which led to an angry reaction from Kylian Mbappe after he failed to pass him the ball during his brief stint on the pitch, the Turkish talent has now come under fire from prominent Spanish journalist Antonio Romero.

    WHAT ANTONIO ROMERO SAID

Antonio Romero, a commentator at Spanish radio station Cadena SER, firmly rejected the idea that Guler could take on the role of Luka Modric at the Bernabeu. He said: "This guy has been misleading from the start. Lots of highlights, lots of training sessions, but that's all – he's very 'viral'... Playing football is something else. When Modric retires, has a tomato garden in Croatia and seventy grandchildren, he will still be better than Guler!"

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Turkish international is said to have recently made a decision regarding his future. Recent weeks have been rife with speculation that Guler has decided to leave Real Madrid in order to get regular game time should Carlo Ancelotti remain as the club's head coach for another season. Real are said to be open to his departure, provided they retain control over the future of the 20-year-old prodigy. A loan or a transfer with a buy-back option seems to be the most likely option, with Bundesliga sides Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig keeping tabs on the player's situation.
