Tottenham piled more misery on City by taking a 2-0 lead over Pep Guardiola's side at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The champions headed into the match on a four-game losing run but made a poor start, with the visitors scoring twice in the opening 20 minutes through James Maddison.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

Fans were quick to point the finger at Gvardiol for the goals as the defender came in for huge criticism during the match.

City supporter @cricketjim1 posted on X: "Gvardiol tricked everyone by being the best player in the world for about 3 months. He’s GARBAGE A."

And @ml27___ posted: "I’m sick and tired of “Gvardiol” we’ve been hoodwinked bamboozled flat out led astray."

It was a feeling shared by @MuskCaughtAP who added: "Gvardiol can’t defend to save his life man."

City fan @citehdx also had a very harsh verdict on the defender: "Gvardiol is proper f*cking useless unless he’s got it on his right foot from 20 yards out."

And Gvardiol's performance was even called a "disasterclass" by @LFC_ERYAN: "Gvardiol don't hide, we have seen your disasterclass this game, best [left-back] in the league by arse."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

City splashed out £77m (€90m/$98m) to land Gvardiol in the summer of 2023 and he's gone on to become a regular fixture in the City line-up. The defender has also become known for scoring some impressive goals, and indeed has three already this season, but he's unlikely to look back on his first half against Tottenham fondly after struggling against Ange Postecoglou's side.
