Lamine Yamal, Gilberto Mora and 11 NXGN wonderkids set to light up the 2026 World Cup

Pele and Kylian Mbappe are the only teenagers to have scored in the final of the World Cup, but plenty of others - from Michael Owen to Lionel Messi - have shone on the global stage despite not yet having reached their 20s.

So, who could follow in their footsteps in the United States, Mexico and Canada? GOAL has selected 11 NXGN-eligible players (born 2007 or later) who could make a real name for themselves this summer...

  • FBL-WC-2026-EUR-QUALIFIERS-BUL-ESPAFP

    Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Not just the standout teenager at this summer's World Cup, there is a real chance that Lamine Yamal will be the standout player in North America, so talented is the Barcelona and Spain winger. Ever since he marked his international debut with a stunning goal against Georgia as a 16-year-old, Yamal has been an automatic selection for Luis de la Fuente.

He has already shown that he will not be daunted by the prospect of playing at a major tournament, having run riot at Euro 2024 as La Roja triumphed in Germany. Yamal's goal to open the scoring against France in the semi-finals was a thing of real beauty, and his club form since suggests that more of the same could be on the menu.

The one spanner in the works? Yamal suffered a hamstring injury in April that is set to rule him out of at least Spain's opening game, and could sideline him for slightly longer. De la Fuente's side should still ease into the knockouts without their boy wonder, but how up to speed will Yamal be when he does return to fitness? The answer could well determine whether Yamal will get the chance to lift the World Cup trophy just six days after his 19th birthday.

    Pau Cubarsi (Spain)

Yamal will not the only teenager in the Spain line-up, though. Pau Cubarsi started four of La Roja's six World Cup qualifiers in late-2025 and looks to be establishing himself in De la Fuente's plans having been a slightly surprising omission from Spain's victorious Euros squad.

The 19-year-old has been a mainstay of Hansi Flick's Barcelona for over two years now, with Cubarsi's composure on the ball and passing ability matching his high-level defensive instincts. This tournament will likely be the first of many in what promises to be a long and successful career.

    Kendry Paez (Ecuador)

One teenager who unfortunately won't be on show in North America this summer is Estevao, after the Brazil forward picked up a late-season injury while playing for Chelsea that ruled him out of contention for selection. However, there will still be one BlueCo owned youngster on display.

Ecuador midfielder Kendry Paez is one of the most experienced teenagers in terms of international caps who has been called-up for the World Cup. Currently playing his club football on loan at River Plate, the Chelsea youngster has been tipped as a potential star from as far back as 2023, when he made his international debut at 16.

Paez subsequently became the youngest player to ever score in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying a few weeks later, but he has mostly been used as a substitute at international level since the 2024 Copa America. That is not to say that the 19-year-old won't be able to make a big impression in North America. Indeed, Paez has sufficient magic in his boots to catch the eye for one of the tournament's dark horses.

    Ibrahim Mbaye (Senegal)

Perhaps now more than ever before, a number of players are being presented with a choice when it comes to their international allegiances, with plenty of likely participants in the World Cup set to represent countries they may not have envisioned playing for while growing up.

Ibrahim Mbaye, for example, spent his childhood lining out for France at every level up to Under-20s, only to accept a call-up from Senegal in November.

The 18-year-old netted on his second appearance for the Lions of Teranga, thus becoming the west African nation's youngest-ever scorer, and then played a role in their run to the Africa Cup of Nations final, where he scored once and assisted twice. The Paris Saint-Germain forward will, thus, be confident of leaving his mark on his second major tournament of 2026.

    Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)

Another 18-year-old who will be representing an African nation this summer despite playing for France's age-group sides is Ayyoub Bouaddi, who switched his international allegiance to Morocco on the eve of the tournament.

Bouaddi has 10 France Under-21 caps to his name, but the Lille midfielder has gone straight into the Atlas Lions' squad as they aim to repeat their run to the semi-finals from 2022. Certainly Bouaddi will add plenty of quality to Morocco's line up having caught the eye in both Ligue 1 and, most notably, the Champions League over the past two seasons.

PSG and Arsenal are currently competing to try and sign Bouaddi this summer, and Lille will be hoping he can impress in North America so as to drive up his price even further.

  • Gilberto Mora Mexico 2026Getty Images

    Gilberto Mora (Mexico)

As co-hosts, Mexico were always going to be under a lot of pressure at the World Cup, even before their failure to get out of the group stage in 2022. El Tri, then, are looking for new heroes to emerge, and the weight of expectation has been placed firmly on Gilberto Mora's shoulders, despite him being the youngest player at the entire tournament.

The 17-year-old, nicknamed 'The Mexican Pedri', was thrust into his country's starting XI for the knockout rounds of the 2025 Gold Cup, and he ended up playing a key role as Javier Aguirre's side claimed the trophy, making Mora the youngest player to win a major international tournament, breaking a record set by Yamal 12 months earlier.

Injury did sideline the Club Tijuana starlet for the first few months of 2026, but he has since returned to full fitness and should be back in the line up when Mexico kick-off the tournament on June 11.

  • Luka Vuskovic Croatia 2026Getty Images

    Luka Vuskovic (Croatia)

Much will be made of Croatia's veterans once again this summer, with 40-year-old Luka Modric leading the way at the fifth World Cup of his illustrious career. But there is a new generation of talent emerging behind those household names, with Luka Vuskovic undoubtedly one of the most exciting following a season where he announced himself as one of the most promising young centre-backs in Europe.

The Tottenham loanee shone during his time at Hamburg, earning himself a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season as well as interest from Barcelona in his services, while Vuskovic also picked up his first two international caps during World Cup qualifying.

A real threat from set-pieces as well as being a top defender, the 19-year-old could even start alongside Josko Gvardiol for Zlatko Dalic's side this summer.

  • Kerim AlajbegovicGetty

    Kerim Alajbegovic (Bosnia & Herzegovina)

While Edin Dzeko will likely garner the most interest among Bosnia and Herzegovina's players as they embark on just their second World Cup campaign, it is a player at the opposite end of his career who is perhaps the most intriguing member of the squad. In fact, without the contributions of Kerim Alajbegovic, Bosnia might not even be in North America at all.

The 19-year-old stepped off the bench to first assist Dzeko's equaliser in March's play-off semi-final against Wales before Alajbegovic converted the winning penalty in the shootout to secure his country's passage to the final against Italy. Alajbegovic again caught the eye against the Azzurri as Bosnia triumphed once more spot-kicks, and thus the languid winger will now have the grandest stage of all to show what he is capable of.

Alajbegovic is coming off a season with Red Bull Salzburg where he scored 13 goals in all competitions, with his performances in Austria enough to convince Bayer Leverkusen to activate their buy-back clause and bring Alajbegovic back to Germany ahead of next season's Bundesliga campaign.

  • Tyler Fletcher Scotland 2026Getty Images

    Tyler Fletcher (Scotland)

Scotland were dealt a blow on the eve of the World Cup when key midfielder Billy Gilmour suffered a knee injury in their pre-tournament friendly win over Haiti that ruled him out of contention. But one player's despair is another's joy, and Tyler Fletcher will be keen to make the most of his surprise opportunity.

The son of former Scotland and Manchester United midfielder, Darren, Fletcher Jr made his debut for the Red Devils during this past season having previously spent time in Manchester City's academy, and was named United's reserve team player of the year last month.

A combative, ball-playing midfielder, the 19-year-old briefly represented England at youth level alongside his twin brother, Jack. However, while Jack is still on the pathway towards one day playing for the Three Lions, Tyler committed to Scotland in 2024 and has now been rewarded with a place at the World Cup.

  • Lucas Herrington Australia 2026Getty Images

    Lucas Herrington (Australia)

Unlike most of his Australia team-mates, Lucas Herrington hasn't had to travel far to reach the Socceroos' World Cup training base in California, given he plays his club football in MLS for the Colorado Rapids. There's a chance during his tournament, too, that the 18-year-old will be able to show just why he has been earning rave reviews since his arrival in the United States at the start of 2026.

Despite arriving with just 29 first-team appearances under his belt from his time in the A-League with the Brisbane Roar, Herrington has played every minute for the Rapids so far this season, emerging as one the best young centre-backs in the entire league.

Herrington's performances earned him his first Australia caps in March, and he could very well find himself in Tony Popovic's starting XI against Turkiye on June 13 for the Socceroos' tournament opener. Already attracting interest from the Premier League and around Europe, some strong performances would likely lead to even more scouts taking notice of Herrington's potential.

  • Hamza Abdekarim Egypt 2026Getty Images

    Hamza Abdelkarim (Egypt)

And finally, a true wildcard pick from Egypt, who selected previously uncapped Hamza Abdelkarim to widespread shock when their final World Cup squad was named. The striker has just nine senior club appearances to his name since becoming the youngest player in Al-Ahly's history in February 2025, and had previously only represented his country's U17s.

That isn't to say Abdelkarim is not an exciting prospect, and his potential was illustrated in February when he was taken on loan by none other than Barcelona. He has since scored five goals in seven league games for the Blaugrana's U19s, and the Spanish giants are hopeful of making Abdelkarim's move permanent this summer.

It remains to be seen, then, how Egypt plan to use the 18-year-old this summer. He has been handed the No.9 shirt, which suggests he could see the pitch over the course of the tournament.
