  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Having targeted Brentford's Yoane Wissa for much of the summer, Newcastle are reported by Fabrizio Romano to have "verbally agreed" the capture of the 28-year-old forward. The package is said to be worth £55 million ($74m), significantly more than what the Magpies were previously believed to have offered. Wissa will join recent club record signing Nick Woltemade in helping to replace Liverpool-bound Alexander Isak.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wissa made clear his desire to leave Brentford at the start of the summer and appears to have at last won his personal battle with the Bees. The DR Congo international moved to desperate measures over the weekend, releasing a lengthy statement on social media that accused Brentford of reneging on an agreement to let him leave and "unduly" blocking an exit. But a breakthrough in Liverpool's pursuit of Isak, that is set to see the Swede become the most expensive player in British football history, appears to have unlocked the Wissa situation.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

With Isak refusing to play and Callum Wilson released at the end of last season, the unproven William Osula has been Newcastle's only available striker in the opening weeks of 2025-26. Eddie Howe had even opted to play without a recognised No. 9 until Anthony Gordon's suspension ruled him out of Saturday's goal-less draw with Leeds United. But with the capture of Woltemade and now the expected arrival of Wissa, there will be a significant boost to the Magpies' forward line.

    WHAT NEXT?

Wissa is travelling from London to north east England to undergo a medical later on Monday and ultimately complete the transfer. If everything goes to plan, he and Woltemade could make their respective Newcastle debuts after the international break.
