'Mikel Arteta is a control freak' - Arsenal boss brutally criticised by Peter Schmeichel as Man Utd legend accuses manager of confusing his players and making them worse

Arteta has come in for some savage criticism from Schmeichel, with the Gunners set for yet another trophyless season under the Spaniard. Liverpool have already been crowned Premier League champions, while Arsenal saw their Champions League dreams ended by PSG in the semi-finals of the competition and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United.

Questions are now being asked of Arteta as it's now five seasons since the club lifted silverware. There's even been speculation that Arteta could move on if he fails to end Arsenal's trophy drought next season. Schmeichel, who won all the major domestic honours on offer during his career, has now shared his thoughts on the situation at Arsenal and did not hold back in his criticism of the Gunners boss.

He told ViaPlay: "It’s all on Arteta, all. What I’m saying is, he was employed as head coach. He inherited the team and that team is the only team that he has won a trophy with. Then it’s his own team and then in the process, he’s now changed the job description so he’s now the manager. Everything is on him. It’s not recruitment, it’s not the board. Whenever they [fans] get the opportunity today, watch him in the technical area. Arteta is a control freak, he wants his players to play the ball that he wants. He’s directing everything. You look across to Arne Slot who’s so calm. He’s instructed his players in training, instructed the players in the team talk. Arteta is still playing the game for the players and that would confuse the hell out of me as a football player that you had a coach that wants to direct me for everything I do. It would confuse me and make me a worse player.”

Arsenal are expected to strengthen the squad in the summer in a bid to try and end their long wait for a trophy. Martin Zubimendi is expected to arrive from Real Sociedad, while the Gunners continue to be linked with a host of strikers in a bid to end their issues in attack.
