  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wirtz's contract with Leverkusen expires in 2027 and, while the Bundesliga champions are determined for him to sign a bumper extension and commit his future to the club, numerous sides across Europe are hoping to tempt the 21-year-old to join them this summer. The likes of Real Madrid and Manchester City are expected to rival Bayern in the race for Wirtz this summer, although the youngster could also end up remaining with Leverkusen.

    WHAT RUMMENIGGE SAID

Speaking to Italian outlet Corriere della Sera, Rummenigge described Wirtz and Musiala as "the two goal-scoring twins" of Germany, saying: "They are great talents of world football, not just German."

When asked whether Wirtz would one day play alongside Musiala for Bayern, Rummenigge said: "I hope so, it would be a great coup for us to be able to convince Wirtz and Leverkusen. WHAT NEXT FOR WIRTZ AND BAYERN?

Wirtz missed Leverkusen's Champions League knockout second-leg tie against Bayern through injury and he may still be absent for their game this weekend against Stuttgart. Such news would be welcome for Bayern, who are determined to avoid losing their nine-point lead over Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, having dropped points for the second match in a row with a draw against Union Berlin on Saturday.
