That campaign will see Messi entering the final year of his contract, and he has posted on social media of remaining fully committed to the pursuit of major silverware in Florida: “A season ended in which we continued to grow as a club and, although we achieved some goals, we wanted more. Thanks to all the people who joined and supported us. Now let's get ready to come back stronger next year.”

Messi does have the option of a 12-month extension in his Inter Miami contract, with Herons boss Tata Martino telling reporters when asked about his fellow countryman’s long-term future: “I actually don't know how limited [Messi's time in this league] is. There is a question of time passing, but I would not dare to say that it is so short.”

Messi will have plenty of trophies to compete for next season, with MLS Cup glory remaining the ultimate target. Inter Miami will also be competing in the Leagues Cup and CONCACAF Champions Cup, while an invitation has been accepted to form part of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup event – which be taking place on American soil.
