GOAL's Culture Axis: New adidas Predators in THAT colourway, Lionel Messi finally answers 'Stoke' question, signature boots for Christian Pulisic & more

Welcome to the Culture Axis, where GOAL runs the rule over all the latest from the intersection of football and culture - from the sublime to the ridiculous, to what hits and what misses completely.

This week has been all about some serious throwbacks, with a few of the biggest brands in the game giving us a very generous shot of nostalgia, while Lionel Messi has proved a big point stateside.

But where do the week's biggest talking points from the football zeitgeist place in our comprehensive axis? Let's get into it...

Mbappe tears Man City to shreds

Kylian Mbappe's Real Madrid career has been simmering along nicely, but perhaps had just been lacking that moment where he announced himself as the club's latest 'Galactico' - until now, that is.

Channelling his predecessors Cristiano Ronaldo and R9, Mbappe delivered on the biggest stage in midweek as he dropped a finishing clinic with a sublime hat-trick to obliterate Manchester City's Champions League hopes.

It was a hatty for the ages, too; a masterful looping lob, sending Josko Gvardiol to the shops before burying his second, and a body feint and clinical left-footed strike for three. Bonafide superstar stuff.

  • Nike re-release Total 90 astros

Nike's highly-anticipated relaunch of their Total 90 silo is nearly here, but the iconic silhouette will initially return in the form of a fashion sneaker rather than to the pitch where many will feel it belongs.

Dropping in early March, the idea of pairing the classic silver and red colourway with jeans and a t-shirt is giving serious early-noughties birthday party vibes. We're just not sure this one will translate to the streets...

  • Arsenal's North London Classics collection

Arsenal Fashion Club are at it again. The Gunners are trying to pull on their fans' heartstrings (and purse strings) with yet another streetwear drop, this time paying homage to the club's north London roots.

The 'North London Classics' capsule includes workwear-style jackets, a retro '1886' print shirt and hoodies, as well as caps and beanies if you're after accessories. Don't get us wrong, it's a nice collection - but how much merch is too much merch?

  • New Predators in THAT colourway

The one we've all been waiting for. adidas just don't miss at the moment, with the new-look Predator back in everyone's favourite colourway: black, red and white.

A palette synonymous with the legendary silo, the Predator FT is sure to be a sell-out hit given its OG look, with the iconic tongue and three thick stripes on the sides. Memories of peak Steven Gerrard, Zinedine Zidane and Kaka come flooding back just looking at 'em.

adidas drop Euro 2025 away kits

Euro 2025 is on the horizon, and adidas are getting us all in the mood for the tournament in Switzerland by dropping their away kits for the federations they supply, including world champions Spain, Germany and Italy.

Each takes inspiration from the artistic movements that are a huge part of each country's culture, with Sweden's deep blue shirt - drawing on abstract expressionism - arguably the pick of the bunch.

  • Signature PUMA boots for Pulisic

PUMA have blessed USMNT and AC Milan star Christian Pulisic with his latest pair of signature boots, but these aren't for the fainthearted.

A nod to Puli's rise to the top, the 'Chasing The Dream Pack' has landed in the form of PUMA's ULTRA 5 boot in a bold violet colourway that fades into a lime green around the toe box. They'll certainly distract your opponent, but the jury is out on these.

Nike's classic Total 90 PL ball is back

Nike have given their Total 90 reboot the perfect prelude with the relaunch of their iconic ball from the same era - their last-ever as the Premier League's supplier before PUMA take the reins.

A remake of the classic T90 Aerow I from the 2004-06 seasons will be used for the remainder of the campaign, made iconic by its three-ring design. The fresh look for the Nike Flight ball was debuted in midweek as Aston Villa hosted Liverpool. A big dollop of pure Barclays.

  • Lionel Messi Inter Miami 2025Getty

    Messi answers age-old 'Stoke' question

Can Lionel Messi do it on a cold, rainy night in Stoke? Well, probably. The Argentine superhuman has given us the most definitive answer yet to Andy Gray's famous question, braving -17C temperatures as Inter Miami travelled to Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night.

Despite the bitterly cold weather - the likes of which Messi is said to hate - Leo delivered the decisive moment. Of course he did. The phenomenon plucked an aerial ball out of the freezing night air before taking advantage of the conditions by putting his defender on skates and sliding an inch-perfect, angled finish into the far corner for what proved to be the winner. Does that answer your question, Andy?

  • Supreme x Umbro

Umbro's unlikely renaissance continues in the form of another collab with iconic streetwear label Supreme, as the two brands yank us back to the late 90s with their new collection.

It features an array of Gore-Tex shell suits, football-style knitwear and tees, coming to a terrace near you very soon. It's a collection that oozes English school playground bully.

  • Man City's new Oasis capsule

There is so much potential in a Man City x Oasis collab if it's done right, but the football club's new capsule collection alongside the legendary Britpop band feels like a lazy cash grab, if we're being completely honest.

It features t-shirts bearing iconic Man City moments and the Oasis logo alongside appropriate lyrics, as well as a very simple hoodie with Oasis logo across the chest and City badge on the sleeve. It seems they've both understood the importance of being idle with this one. We'll show ourselves out.

    Bayern's 125th anniversary kit

Bayern Munich will celebrate their 125th anniversary as a football club later in February, and adidas have dropped a stunning one-off kit to mark the occasion.

A red shirt with gold detailing, the shirt features a special crest and subtle all-over print that pays homage to Bayern's storied past and continued dominance in the modern era. A pretty decent birthday present, all told.
