    VAR has, however, courted plenty of controversy, with calls often made that leave supporters scratching their heads. Their have been regular admissions of getting decisions wrong, while the length of time taken in some reviews has become farcical.

    Ex-United States international Twellman, who is now a pundit, admits as much and said while on Apple TV commentary duty for the MLS fixture between St Louis FC and LAFC on Wednesday: “Different countries, different leagues, they look at offside in different ways. Look at England. It's like circumcising a mosquito when it comes to looking at VAR and certain things.”

    Twellman responded to a fan posting a video of his bizarre statement on social media by saying: “You know I’m not wrong.” VAR was introduced into MLS back in 2017, while each passing round of fixtures in the Premier League seems to deliver fresh controversy and debate regarding the use of technology in sport.
