'Let my performance on the field do the talking' - Tijuana's Gilberto Mora brushes off Real Madrid links, keeps focus on U-20 World Cup

At just 16 years old, Gilberto Mora has quickly become one of the brightest young talents in Mexican football. The Tijuana Xolos academy product has been linked with giants such as Real Madrid, but the teenager insists his focus is firmly on the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup, which begins at the end of September.

“I’m happy and proud that big teams are asking about me, but I try to focus on my own work and let my performance on the field do the talking,” Mora said while in camp with Mexico’s U-20 National Team.

The buzz around his name spiked recently after Spanish media suggested Real Madrid had an eye on him - fitting, as Mora has often spoken about his admiration for Los Blancos. His representative, Rafaela Pimenta, acknowledged that Europe’s elite are watching but downplayed the attention, describing it as “normal” for a player with his potential.

Mora, who is gearing up for the U-20 World Cup with Mexico, says he is focused on enjoying the experience rather than the transfer rumors surrounding him. 

“I’m living something special. I want to work hard, enjoy the present, and win. At the World Cup, I know scouts from top clubs will be watching, and that’s a huge honor. But I want my football to do the talking,” he explained.

Although European interest continues to swirl, FIFA regulations prevent Mora from making a permanent move abroad until he turns 18. For now, he says, representing Mexico remains his top priority. 

“It’s always an honor to wear the national team shirt, whether it’s with the senior side or the U-20s. Playing in this World Cup is a dream,” he said.

The teenager also revealed that Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre has been encouraging with his advice, urging players to see international duty as the best path for growth. 

“He told us the national team is the best place to develop. I’m proud to be here, and going to a World Cup at this age is the best experience possible,” said Mora.

Mexico have been drawn into one of the most challenging groups of the U-20 tournament. They will face Brazil in their opening match on Sept. 28, before taking on Spain and Morocco.
