New York Red Bulls reportedly engaged in talks with RB Leipzig for former Champions League winner Timo Werner

The New York Red Bulls are reportedly engaged in talks with former UEFA Champions League winner with Chelsea, Timo Werner, over a summer transfer from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, according to The Athletic.

The Germany international, 29, has represented his country 57 times and spent the last 18 months on loan at English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

No agreement has been made yet, but the two clubs are optimistic that a deal can be reached this summer.

The secondary MLS transfer window runs from Thursday, July 24, through Thursday, August 21.

The report added that Werner and RBNY engaged in talks in summer 2024 and have been in active communication since. The 29-year-old is reportedly keen on securing a move to the Eastern Conference side, where he would reunite with former Leipzig teammate Emil Forsberg, whom he played with in 2017.

Werner was a part of the roster that won the DFB-Pokal in 2023, the first trophy in the club’s history, and it earned him a spot back on the national team -- but he quickly became surplus for both club and country. He was loaned to Spurs in January 2024 and has been there since. The 29-year-old was recently a part of the squad that lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy with the London-based club. Werner's last call-up to the German national team was in June 2023.

RBNY, meanwhile, made it to the MLS Cup in 2024 for the first time since 2008, where they lost the final to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Werner started the UCL final for Chelsea against Manchester City in 2021, lining up as a center-forward for the Blues as they lifted the European trophy, defeating Pep Guardiola's men 1-0.

The secondary transfer window opens in a few weeks, but the Red Bulls and Leipzig will remain in talks as they look to secure a deal. The Eastern Conference side currently has a Designated Player slot open, and Werner would likely take one up. On loan at Tottenham, his salary was reportedly around $ 225,000 per week and roughly $9 million per year.
