  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 15-year-old is the United legend's eldest son and as he works his way through the Red Devils' youth ranks he's turning into a prolific forward himself, with videos posted online suggesting he's inherited his father's renowned goalscoring skills. Now, Kai's latest Instagram story shows that he's been handed United's famous No.7 shirt at youth level, the same jersey worn by the likes of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rooney Junior was snapped up by Manchester United's academy in 2020 after spending some time with Manchester City youth teams beforehand. His father will certainly be happy that the teenager is progressing through the academy of his former club rather than their arch-rivals, and it seems like Kai has fostered a similar dislike for the blue side of Manchester — in a recent social media post, he saw the funny side in City's recent slump.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Kai has already enjoyed plenty of success at youth level, winning multiple trophies in his fledgling career including the 2023 U13 National Cup North, where he scored in the final against Man City to secure a 2-0 victory. The season before that, he netted a remarkable 56 times across the campaign and also registered 28 assists, a tally that suggests he's got a good chance of going all the way to the top.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR KAI ROONEY?

Despite Rooney Junior's excellent performances at youth level, it will still probably be a while before we see the 15-year-old making a senior appearance for the Red Devils (assuming he makes the step up to senior football). Perhaps he'll even follow his father into the EFL first — the retired pro is currently struggling to prove his salt at Plymouth Argyle, where he's in the midst of a fierce Championship relegation battle.
