'Whoever allowed David de Gea to leave should have been made redundant!' - Rio Ferdinand backs calls for Man Utd to re-sign Spanish goalkeeper amid Andre Onana & Altay Bayindir struggles

In the summer of 2023, De Gea bid farewell to United after 12 years, as his contract was not renewed. Andre Onana was signed from Inter Milan as his replacement but he has made a string of errors, and backup 'keeper Altay Bayindir has also flattered to deceive. Now, Red Devils legend Ferdinand wants the person who let the Spaniard go to be held accountable, and has backed calls for the club to re-sign the Fiorentina star.

He said on Rio Reacts: "I wouldn't have sold David de Gea, I would never have let him go... simple as that. I don't know why he was ever allowed to leave the building. Whoever allowed David De Gea to leave the building should have been made redundant and not worked in the game again. You can't be winning Golden Gloves at your football club and being the best player in the team, player of the year probably three or four times out of six or seven years and then go, 'Listen, see you later', when you are coming into your best years."

There is no doubt that the 'keeper position is a sizeable issue for United, so much so that they are looking to sign Antwerp star Senne Lammens as well. But whether De Gea would have been the solution to their keeper problems is still up for debate.

All eyes will be on who will start in goal for Ruben Amorim's team for their second round Carabao Cup clash away to League Two promotion hopefuls Grimsby Town on Wednesday night. Bayindir has started both Premier League games for United so far this season, but Onana may yet be given the nod in the midweek clash.
