- Thorrington raves about Philly rivalry
- Clubs met in MLS Cup final last year
- Looking forward to CCL semis against Philly
WHAT HAPPENED? During an interview with MLSsoccer.com, Thorrington talked about LAFC and the rivalries that have developed since the club came into existence in 2014, including the in-city rivalry against the LA Galaxy and the "more organic" one with the Philadelphia Union.
LAFC faces the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday and Thorrington believes there's something special brewing between them.
WHAT THEY SAID: “The LA Galaxy rivalry will always be there, and it was always going to be a rivalry for us,” LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington detailed to MLSsoccer.com. “But I think what this rivalry brings with Philly, it is more of that organic growth.
“It happened not just because of the places in the standings and what have you, but also you have these moments culminating in MLS Cup [2022] and in years past where we've had great battles against them. I'm sure, despite the fact the competition is different, it's a high-stakes game. We're really looking forward to the test that Philly presents to our group.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Philadelphia Union and LAFC's rivalry transcends those created thanks to historical or geographical rivalries. This rivalry is one that is created through a host of intense and high-importance matches, and with each team again competitive this year, there could be more memorable clashes in store.
