It was only a few years ago that Spain dominated international football, winning two European Championships and a World Cup between 2008 and 2012 to establish themselves as one of the greatest teams in history.
However, one group stage exit and two at the last-16 at the three major tournaments since then has left Luis Enrique with a difficult job on his hands this summer.
How did Spain qualify for Euro 2020?
Spain had few issues reaching Euro 2020, winning their first six matches to all but secure their place in the finals before eventually confirming that status two games later with a 1-1 draw in Sweden.
Despite an impressive haul of 31 goals in just 10 fixtures, no player struck more than four times for La Roja - with that amount each scored by Rodrigo, Sergio Ramos and Alvaro Morata all chipping in.
Defence proved to be somewhat of an issue as they managed only five clean sheets, so the decision to drop Ramos for the main tournament will be scrutinised closely.
Spain's European Championship history
Spain are the joint-most successful side in European Championship history, having lifted the trophy in 1964, 2008 and 2012 and been runners up in 1984.
Generally, though, it has been feast-or-famine for the Iberian nation, who have also failed to qualify on five occasions and been knocked out at the group stages a further three times.
While they did reach the knockout stages at Euro 2016, it still proved to be a disappointment for La Roja as they finished second in Group D and then crashed out against Italy in the last-16.
