Alvaro Morata Chelsea 2017-18

Morata and Bakayoko slammed by ex-Chelsea striker Cascarino

Alvaro Morata and Tiemoue Bakayoko have been slammed for their performances this season by former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino.

The Blues have been disappointing in their attempt to defend their Premier League title and they currently sit in fifth place with only an outside chance of finishing in the top four.

Cascarino, who played 40 times for Chelsea in the league, questioned why former Real Madrid striker Morata could not be more decisive in front of goal for Antonio Conte.

"Alvaro Morata does so many good things on the pitch but he just needs to learn to get the ball out of his feet more quickly and shoot," he told The Times.

"Sometimes the Chelsea striker seems to be waiting for the perfect situation to arise before he takes aim at goal.

"To be a great centre-forward you need to hit the ball early and try to break the net."

Cascarino was referencing Chelsea's draw against Huddersfield on Wednesday night where Morata squandered a simple chance in the first half when he found himself one on one with the Huddersfield goalkeeper.

The ex-Republic of Ireland international columnist also feels that Bakayoko, who was signed in the 2017 off-season, has been a poor replacement for Nemanja Matic in the Stamford Bridge side's midfield.

"N'Golo Kante has really missed having Matic alongside him in the centre of Chelsea’s midfield this season," he added.

"Bakayoko was brought in last summer but has failed to make anything like the impact of the Serb, who joined Manchester United."

Cascarino worries for the team's future if Eden Hazard departs this summer, with many suspecting that Real Madrid could revive their interest.

"Hazard can change a game in an instant and take teams apart, whereas his team-mates were struggling to create chances against a packed defence," he added.

Chelsea finish their league season with a clash against Newcastle United before playing an FA Cup final against Manchester United next weekend.
