East Bengal have officially roped in former Mohun Bagan midfielder Yusa Katsumi for the upcoming I-League season. The 29-year-old Japanese midfielder becomes the fourth foreign player to join the ranks of the Kolkata giants in the ongoing season.
Katsumi has been a trusted lieutenant for the Green and Maroon for the last four seasons. The player came to India in 2011 and after spending two seasons with ONGC, he joined Bagan in 2013.
The midfielder was one of the best players Mohun Bagan have had during the last few seasons and he played a vital role in guiding the club to lift the coveted I-League title in 2015 and Federation Cup in 2016. The duo of Yusa Katsumi and Sony Norde on the Bagan flanks was one of the deadliest in the country.
Katsumi’s inclusion adds great value to the Red and Golds ’ squad. With the signing of the midfielder, East Bengal also complete their quota of Asian players. They already have Syrian international Mahmoud Al Amna who joined the club from Aizawl FC earlier this season.
Born in Fukushima, Katsumi was a product of Japanese club Sanfrecce Hiroshima F.C’s youth system. He was promoted to the club’s senior side in 2007. After spending two seasons with Sanfrecce, he moved to Paraguaya to join Club Sportivo San Lorenzo in 2010 and played there for a season.
The midfielder has also appeared in the Indian Super League (ISL) for NorthEast United FC in 2016. He was one of the most important players in the NorthEast side and had also scored a goal in his maiden appearance for The Highlanders .
