The Reds squandered a number of chances against the Magpies – with Mohamed Salah missing a first-half penalty – but surged forward at every opportunity and eventually wrapped up a welcome win that has sent them three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Klopp broke out his trademark first pump celebration in front of The Kop at the final whistle, but saw his wedding ring slip from his finger in the process. His blushes were spared – keeping him in the good books of wife Ulla Sandrock at the start of 2024 – when a camera man spotted the jewellery in question and pointed the Reds boss in the right direction.

Klopp said of briefly being separated from his wedding band – with it not the first time that he has endured such panic: “I had a massive shock, but it's back. I lost it once in my life - I needed a professional diver because it was in the sea. From time to time when I lose one or two kilos, it's not the right fit anymore.”

Klopp was a bundle of energy against Newcastle – prowling the touchline and engaging in regular conversations with the fourth official – and is unlikely to calm down any time soon as Liverpool’s next match is set to see them travel to Arsenal in the FA Cup third round.
