USWNT star Trinity Rodman leaves Washington Spirit match in wheelchair after suffering back injury

USWNT star Trinity Rodman went down to the ground in the 75th minute of the Washington Spirit's eventual 3-0 loss to the Current. The injury came after she shielded the ball from KC's Temwa Chawinga, leading to Rodman needing treatment from medical personnel.

She walked back to the bench with assistance but was then taken to the locker room in a wheelchair a few moments later.

The defeat was a bad one for the Spirit, who now sit seven points behind Orlando Pride for the NWSL Shield. Rodman has been a key part of that Shield push, with her eight goals good for fourth-best in the league while her six assists are second-most in the NWSL.

On the international level, Rodman was been arguably the USWNT's most consistent player. The winger has appeared in each match of the past two years while making her mark on the Olympic Gold Medal run.

Spirit coach Jonatan Giraldez said after the match that he had "no information" and would wait until Rodman was further evaluated upon returning to Washington.

Rodman’s agent, Mike Senkowski, told the Washington Post that she had suffered “intense back spasm.”

“Still in a [lot] of pain," he said, "but I’m hopeful [she] avoided a very serious injury."

There are just five matches remaining in the NWSL regular season as the Spirit look to finish atop the league. Next up is a visit to Angel City on Friday before a marquee clash with Orlando Pride on Oct. 6.
