USMNT player ratings vs Oman: Weston McKennie runs the midfield in lopsided win

The U.S. men's national team was understandably a bit frustrated after their win over Uzbekistan at the weekend. The score told one story, as it does after a 3-0 win. The gameplay, though, told another, as the U.S. attack truly struggled until stealing two late goals to put the game out of reach.

There was little to be frustrated about in Tuesday's win over Oman, though. This was a nearly perfect performance, one that will leave Gregg Berhalter thrilled after his second match back.

It ended as a 4-0 win for the U.S. and, unlike Saturday, that scoreline reflected the U.S. dominance. Goals from Folarin Balogun, Brenden Aaronson and Ricardo Pepi will leave Berhalter thrilled, as will the own goal caused by debutant Kevin Paredes late on.

Plenty of players stood out, from newcomers like Balogun, Paredes and Kristoffer Lund all the way to familiar faces like Sergino Dest and Yunus Musah. Weston McKennie, though, was the one who ran the game, putting in a Man of the Match performance next to Musah as the U.S. switched things up tactically.

It was a good win for the U.S., who will look ahead to tougher challenges against Germany and Ghana next month. They'll feel better about those games thanks to the result of this one, as this Oman game saw the USMNT play like a team ready to take their next step together.

GOAL rates the USMNT players from Allianz Field...

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Ethan Horvath (6/10):

Didn't have to do much, but was confident enough when called upon.

    Kristoffer Lund (7/10):

Made a really good impression in his first significant run out. All effort and got forward well. Promising signs for a player that's definitely in the mix at left-back.

    Chris Richards (7/10):

He needs to play, simple as that. When he does get on the field for the U.S., Richards is generally fantastic. The big question is figuring out how to turn that into a role at Crystal Palace.

    Miles Robinson (7/10):

Neatly, and perhaps should have, gotten a goal. Another good runout for the Atlanta United man after missing the big moments in 2022.

    Sergino Dest (7/10):

Nearly scored three times. The first set up the opening goal early on, the second just wide late in the game and the third was the same moments later. Overall, a good runout for Dest, who will have a fantastic season if he can attack like this with PSV.

    Midfield

    Yunus Musah (7/10):

Looked very, very comfortable in this deeper position. You have to take the opposition into account but it was still good to see.

    Weston McKennie (8/10):

How many diagonal balls can one man be allowed to hit? The answer felt like infinity, as McKennie was key in kickstarting the USMNT attack. His effort and hustle was also key to their opener.

    Malik Tillman (6/10):

Decent, but not as good as his two midfield teammates. Still, a positive sign for this No. 10 experiment as the U.S. attack looked miles better with Tillman in that position.

    Attack

    Christian Pulisic (7/10):

Dangerous, but not totally crisp. Looked better in this game than the first one, but got some much-needed rest after 45 ahead of the Milan derby this weekend.

    Folarin Balogun (8/10):

Right place, right time. After a quiet one against Uzbekistan, Balogun got his goal in this one. It was a good poacher's finish, but one that will only add to his confidence for club and country.

    Tim Weah (7/10):

Passing was good, crossing was okay and his runs, as usual, were dangerous. Didn't get the goal like in Game One of this window, but Weah was good again here.

    Subs & Manager

    Ricardo Pepi (8/10):

Six goals in six games so far this season as he added another one here. Pepi is well and truly back.

    Brenden Aaronson (7/10):

His goal was a bit fortunate, but he'll take it! A solid performance from a player that will look to take this back with him to Union Berlin as he prepares for the Champions League

    Benjamin Cremaschi (6/10):

You saw the smile all over his face as he came on for his debut. Nothing crazy from the Inter Miami starlet, but this will be one he'll remember regardless.

    Mark McKenzie (6/10):

Replaced Richards, but never really had to do much as the game was totally out of hand.

    DeJuan Jones (7/10):

Wasn't on the pitch long, but got an assist on Pepi's goal.

    Kevin Paredes (7/10):

Talk about an immediate impact. Came on for his USMNT debut and immediately caused an own goal with a dangerous cross. Good start for the young Wolfsburg star.

    Gregg Berhalter (8/10):

Got just about everything right. Tactics were good, the subs worked wonderfully and several young stars got a good taste of the international level. Job well done.
