‘100% we’re talking about it’ - Wrexham haven’t banned ‘P’ word as excited stars seek to make promotion history for Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney

Superstitious players and coaches often try to steer clear of any discussion regarding end of season targets when the business end of a campaign is reached. They are eager to avoid distractions, with the old cliche of “one game at a time” being wheeled out at regular intervals.

Wrexham, though, are making no secret of the fact that they intend to make history in 2024-25 by becoming the first EFL side to savour three successive promotions. Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have never been shy to air their ambition in public.

Those inside the Red Dragons camp are now doing likewise, with January signing Longman saying: “100% we're talking about [promotion]. We want to do it, that's the goal, we want to make history, that's what we want to do.

“We want to take care of our own business but we'll keep an eye on what's going on around us because at the end of the day, they're our competitors at the moment. Winning games and pushing for promotion, that's why I came here.”

Wrexham dropped points in their latest outing, a 2-2 draw at struggling Cambridge, but are determined to finish with a flourish. Longman added: “There's six games left, there's so many points to grab. We've got to keep playing like that and hopefully those opportunities go in.

“The depth in the squad is incredible, some of the players we've got and the impact they can have off the bench, that's what you need to win three back-to-backs.”

Phil Parkinson’s side will be back in action on Saturday when playing host to Burton Albion. They sit second in the table at present - three points clear of Wycombe, who boast a game in hand - with plenty of drama being delivered for the club’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series.
