A few days ago, any situation involving Fabio Vieira wouldn't have even entered the thinking of any rational Arsenal supporter. Alas, as managers are so keen to remind us, anything can happen in football.
After two subpar seasons in north London, £35m Vieira was loaned back to Porto for 2024-25. He hasn't set the world alight back at the Estadio do Dragao, but has ticked along nicely. Arsenal's social media circles went into overdrive last week when he was omitted from their matchday squad to face crosstown rivals Boavista, igniting the theory he could be recalled amid Saka's injury and a frantic search for solutions.
Porto boss Vitor Bruno poured cold water on this notion rather quickly. He said: "I have to make decisions, pay close attention to the players’ performance and how they view their day-to-day activities. Fabio is very talented but talent has to be based on a series of pre-conditions. And when one or two of them end up falling apart, it makes everything more difficult.
"He has immense potential and I have a large squad that offers me guarantees, I cannot give up on certain principles that are mine. I don't need to pass on any message. Fabio knows me well and we are counting on him. He will be available to play again next week. So it is a question of making decisions."
No matter how bad it gets this month, bringing back Vieira should not be a consideration for Arsenal under any circumstance. He would only serve to block the pathway for players who can contribute to success in both the short and long term. The club aren't really in a position to be letting any other members of the first team get away right now, yet Vieira's presence would paradoxically make their squad building more jumbled.
