'These people are sick' - Son of Real Madrid cult figure Juanito reveals grotesque messages Atletico fans send him over the death of his father in car crash

Juanito became a cult figure at Real Madrid during his 10 years at the club and is perhaps best remembered for his ability to inspire comebacks. The tricky winger was often the driving force for Los Blancos, playing a key role in famous European wins over Celtic, Rijeka, Anderlecht and Inter as well as an incredible turnaround against Borussia Monchengladbach in 1986. Real Madrid lost the first leg 5-1 but managed to win the return 4-0, with Juanita jumping in delight as he was replaced after securing the comeback win.

Madrid are currently in need of a comeback to keep their Champions League hopes alive after going down 3-0 to Arsenal in the first leg of their quarter-final tie. Juanito''s son, Roberto Gomez, has revealed what he thinks about Madrid's chances and also revealed the awful messages he still receives from Atletico fans regarding the death of his father who died in a car accident. He is still remembered at the Santiago Bernabeu by fans who chant 'Illa illa illa, Juanito maravilla' in the seventh minute in his memory.

He told Radio Marca: "I don't like to see the lack of respect towards my father, it's painful. Unfortunately, I don't know why, Atletico fans hate him to a brutal degree. It doesn't make much sense. The things people send me are awful. They send me pictures of the car from the crash, awful pictures of that day. These people are sick."

Gomez was asked asked if Real Madrid are capable of turning around the tie: He added: "Of course. [They can] achieve the unthinkable, like against Manchester City, and that this time there are 90 minutes to do it, which at the Bernabéu was always a long time."

Real Madrid must negotiate a La Liga fixture with Alaves on Sunday first but will then turn their attentions to the visit of Arsenal on Wednesday.
