  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The 23-year-old forward, who made a permanent switch to Marseille from United for £26.6 million in 2024, has been using the summer break as an opportunity to train at familiar grounds to maintain his fitness levels, as revealed by The Sun. He was joined at a Manchester training facility this week by former United youth team-mate D'Mani Mellor. Both players came through the ranks at Carrington, though their paths have diverged over the years.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mellor, now 24, never broke into United's Premier League squad but made a single senior appearance in a 2019 Europa League clash against Astana, a game where Greenwood also featured. Mellor, who substituted in for Tahith Chong during that game, eventually left Old Trafford permanently in 2022 to sign with Wycombe Wanderers. He now plays under the stewardship of Robbie Savage at non-league outfit Macclesfield FC.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In his debut season at Marseille, Greenwood lit up French football with 22 goals and six assists across 36 matches in all competitions. The clinical attacker played a major role in helping Marseille secure Champions League qualification for the 2025-26 campaign, something he’s made clear he wants to be part of.

Greenwood told reporters in May: "I hope to be here next year to play in the Champions League. Some players tell me that playing in the Champions League here is something special. It was a very positive season. We achieved all our goals, we qualified for the Champions League."

Summer transfer rumours have still been swirling, but Marseille have seemingly confirmed that Greenwood will be staying put for at least one more year. The club wrote in a recent social media post: "Looking forward to more, Mason."

    WHAT NEXT FOR GREENWOOD?

Greenwood is determined to stay sharp during the summer break so that he can impress Roberto De Zerbi when Marseille reconvene for pre-season in July. They are set to play two friendlies against Al-Jazira and Valencia on July 26 and 29, respectively, to drum up their preparations for the 2025-26 Ligue 1 season.
