  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mbappe's departure from PSG marked the end of a prolific seven-year tenure, during which he became the club's all-time leading scorer with an astonishing 256 goals. Alongside playing with football legends like Neymar, Thiago Silva, and Lionel Messi, Mbappe cemented his status as one of the world’s best players.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite his monumental contributions, Mbappe's exit from PSG was anything but smooth. PSG, eager to secure a transfer fee, even excluded him from their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea during the summer of 2023. And in February, he announced his decision to leave on a free transfer, a move that led to reduced game time in his final months at the club. The strained relationship between Mbappe and PSG’s hierarchy, including tensions with president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, became public knowledge. Disputes over a €55 million bonus further exacerbated the divide.

  • WHAT MBAPPE SAID

In an interview with beIN Sports, the French forward maintained respect for his former club and said: "I spent seven years at PSG, it was an honour. I think that maybe I didn't say it enough, or didn't show it enough, but I was always aware of where I was and what a great club PSG is. I always said it was the biggest club in France and one of the best in the world. I just left it to go to the biggest club in the world. I always said it was the only club I would have left PSG for."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Mbappe’s childhood aspirations of playing for Real Madrid were well-documented throughout his career. While his loyalty to PSG remains intact, Mbappe admitted that if the opportunity to join Real Madrid hadn’t materialized, he could have envisioned spending his entire career in Paris.

"If I hadn't been able to go to Real, I would have stayed at PSG all my life," he assured. "I had this dream of playing there and I'm very happy about that. But of course, I always watch PSG matches, I have friends in the team and they are playing well at the moment."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE?

Since joining Real Madrid in the summer, Mbappe has already tasted success. He scored in both the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, adding two trophies to his collection. However, Real Madrid’s ambitions remain high as they aim to defend their La Liga and Champions League titles and Mbappe, with already 13 goals in 23 appearances this season, is poised to play a pivotal role in these pursuits.
