Jose Mourinho reiterates claim Man Utd 'legally' should have won 2017-18 Premier League title over Man City & suggests Pep Guardiola's side 'should pay in points' if found guilty in FFP case

United finished a distant second to Pep Guardiola's side in the 2017-18 Premier League race, but since then, City have been accused of breaking the top-flight's financial rules between 2009-18 and have been hit with 115 charges. Mourinho has repeatedly quipped that he has not given up on winning the league title because of City's ongoing legal case, and now the Fenerbahce boss has done the same again this week. The Portuguese also suggested those who break FFP rules should "pay in points" rather than financially.

He told Canal 11: "There's a critical moment at that club, not only with Sir Alex's departure, but also with David Gill's. David Moyes came in, but when my Netflix documentary comes out, the story will be told. I'll arrive later, and when I arrive, I'll arrive at a club still going through that period. We won several things, we finished second in the league. I still say I don't understand clubs that are punished with financial fair play and pay [in cash]. I think they should pay points. Manchester City was punished, and legally, we should have won the league. But it wasn't enough for me to have stability, continuity."

City's ongoing legal battle is one of the biggest football stories in recent years and if found guilty, Pep Guardiola's team could be heavily punished. While trophies being stripped may not be on the cards, hefty points deductions have been mooted that could potentially see City relegated from the top-flight.

While Mourinho may be eager to get a rise out of his great rival Guardiola, the Spaniard is unlikely to respond to this latest jibe. In the meantime, both Fenerbahce and City are busy preparing for the new season, with Mourinho's side due to return to action in the Champions League third-round qualifiers in early August.
