The Alicante-born goalkeeper has struggled to secure a role under Hansi Flick, who does not count on him moving forward. To avoid blocking the club’s plans, Pena has agreed to the renewal-and-loan formula, which will also allow the Catalan giants to register Wojciech Szczesny once his departure is finalised.
Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA AND PENA?
Barcelona expect Pena’s loan move to be finalised next week, possibly near deadline day. Until then, he will remain available for selection and will be on the bench this weekend when Barca face Levante, having beaten Mallorca 3-0 in their opening La Liga match.
