Invincible! Every team to win all six Champions League group games including Liverpool, Real Madrid & Bayern

No matter how many times Manchester City get drawn alongside Shakhtar Donetsk or one poor handful of minnows are drawn into a 'group of death', it's true that no game in the Champions League is an easy one.

That's not to say that we shouldn't expect the mammoth sides to pull off convincing wins - of course not - but when a team is fortunate enough to find themselves in Europe's elite competition, they'll do everything they can to cause an upset.

While trying not to sound too much like Pep Guardiola after managing a sickeningly easy victory, you've got to respect every side you face if you want to go far in the competition.

There are only 13 instances of teams going perfect in the group stages, which is a testament to how difficult a task it is. Two sides have joined this elite club in the last 24 hours, with Manchester City earning their membership card a day after Real Madrid pulled off the achievement for a third time.

So, grab the nostalgia pump and hook it straight to the veins - GOAL is on hand with those other flawless group stage runs.

    AC Milan (1992-93)

The first team to ever achieve the feat, and what a team it was.

Fabio Capello's charges were electric, seeing off a number of sides in the old format to set up a final with eventual winners Marseille. Let's also have some noise for Marco van Basten and his six tournament goals; incredible player.

    Paris Saint-Germain (1994-95)

Paris Saint-Germain still haven't managed to win the competition, but they do have a place in this rather unique hall of fame.

George Weah would go on to win the Ballon d'Or in 1995 after starring in the Champions League, finishing as the competition's top scorer that season.

    Spartak Moscow (1995-96)

An unlikely candidate, Spartak are the perfect name for a rogue question in a pub quiz, and so are the sides they beat.

Spartak saw off Blackburn Rovers and Legia Warsaw early on, finishing up with 18 points from Group B. Unfortunately, all that hard work was undone immediately in the quarter-final when they lost 4-2 over two games to Nantes.

  • Riquelme Barcelona 2002-03Getty Images

    Barcelona (2002-03)

Amazingly, it wasn't a Johan Cruyff or Pep Guardiola Barcelona side that put together a perfect group-stage campaign - it was actually Louis van Gaal's.

Before Van Gaal's reputation was dimmed by his spell at Manchester United and the rather bizarre press conferences that came with it, the Dutch coach was playing brilliant football with Barca, leading them to nine straight victories in the 2002/03 competition before being dumped out by eventual finalists Juventus.

  • Karim Benzema Real Madrid 2011-12Getty Images

    Real Madrid (2011-12)

No club's identity is more intertwined with the Champions League than Real Madrid's, so Los Blancos would have been delighted to complete a perfect group-stage campaign under Jose Mourinho.

In typical Mourinho fashion, the basis for their success was a sound defence, with his side conceding just twice in six games against Dinamo Zagreb, Lyon and Ajax.

Unfortunately, this was not a sign of things to come, as they bowed out in the semi-finals to Bayern Munich on penalties.

  • Real Madrid 2014-15Getty Images

    Real Madrid (2014-15)

Three years later, Madrid were invincible again. This time, Carlo Ancelotti was at the reins and he would have been licking his lips after the Champions League draw.

Their group included a struggling Liverpool and Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets, so it's no wonder they managed a clean sweep. A 5-1 thrashing over eventual runners-up Basel set the tone for a dominant campaign.

  • Bayern Munich 2019-20Getty Images

    Bayern Munich (2019-20)

It's easy to assume that Bayern's 2019-20 season was plain sailing throughout, considering they won all of their Champions League games en route to the trophy.

However, before Hansi Flick took over in November, Die Roten were in free fall. The German deserves massive credit for tweaking a few things and creating one of the best teams in European football history.

  • Ajax 2021-22 Getty Images

    Ajax (2021-22)

Ajax would not have been at the top of a lists of teams expected to win all their Champions League group games during the 2021-22 season.

However, inspired by the free-scoring Sebastien Haller, Erik ten Hag's side dominated a group containing European giants Borussia Dortmund, Sporting CP and Besiktas.

Many of the squad, including Haller, Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Ryan Gravenberch, have since gone on to bigger and better things - such is the curse of being a small fish in the European food chain.

  • Liverpool 2021-22 Porto Getty Images

    Liverpool (2021-22)

Liverpool's flawless 2021-22 campaign is one of the most impressive on this list, considering they found themselves in a group alongside Atletico Madrid, Porto and AC Milan.

The Reds had some close shaves along the way but used the momentum gained in the group stage to propel themselves into the final - where they had their hearts broken by the ruthlessly-efficient Real Madrid.

  • Bayern Munich 2021-22 Getty Images

    Bayern Munich (2021-22)

The third team to win it all - in the group stage at least - during the 2021-22 campaign were Bayern Munich.

The reigning champions racked up the most impressive goal difference of the trio, scoring 22 and conceding just twice. A pair of 3-0 victories over Barcelona helped pad their differential.

  • Bayern Munich 2022-23 Getty Images

    Bayern Munich (2022-23)

Bayern completed their third maximum-points campaign in four years in 2022-23, sealing the feat with a gutsy 2-0 win over Inter. Again, Barcelona were their playthings as they won 5-0 over the two group games.

They could have been joined by Napoli in the invincibles club, only for Luciano Spalletti's side to lose to Liverpool on the final matchday. Gutted.

    Real Madrid (2023-24)

Despite their recent dominance of the competition, 2023-24 was the first time Madrid had registered a 100% record in the Champions League group stages since 2014.

It wasn't all plain sailing, with Union Berlin running them very close both home and away, but Jude Bellingham and Co just about conquered every team in their path.

    Manchester City (2023-24)

City finally got the Champions League monkey off their back by winning the famous trophy for the first time last season and have followed it up by ticking off another milestone. Pep Guardiola's side did have the advantage of a soft group but still demonstrated their relentless hunger when other teams might have lost their motivation.

The treble winners came from behind to beat Red Star Belgrade and RB Leipzig at home while fighting until late in the game to secure victory away to Young Boys. They fielded a young and inexperienced side in their final game away to Red Star but still got the job done to complete the clean sweep.
