Ed Sheeran helped Ipswich with transfer negotiations minutes before joining Taylor Swift on stage in extraordinary summer tale

Ipswich have revealed that minor shareholder Sheeran was involved in the negotiations of one transfer in the summer window as the club attempted to strengthen following their promotion from the Championship. Having been in talks with a potential acquisition, Ipswich CEO Mark Ashton has revealed that he felt Sheeran's intervention would help clinch a deal, because the player in question is a big fan of the Divide hit-maker, and he delivered just minutes before playing a huge show with Swift at Wembley.

CEO Ashton said at a Soccerex event in Miami: "In the summer, we were trying to persuade one particular player to join the football club and realized very quickly that he was an Ed Sheeran fan.

"Ed jumped on a Zoom call with him at the training ground, just before he stepped on stage with Taylor Swift. Hopefully that was a key part in getting the player across the line."

Asked for details on the player, Ashton replied: "He's certainly scoring a few goals."

Per ESPN, Sheeran played alongside Swift at Wembley on August 15, and 24 hours later, the Tractor Boys announced the signing of Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn. After scoring against Tottenham, the striker posted a picture on Instagram of himself and Sheeran.

Ipswich play Manchester United at Portman Road this weekend in Ruben Amorim's first match in charge of the Red Devils. Sheeran is very likely to be in attendance.
