'It's costing me money!' - Ex-Liverpool flop Andy Carroll makes surprise admission after joining Bordeaux in French fourth tier

Bordeaux were declared bankrupt last month and placed in financial administration following a failed purchase by Liverpool's owners, FSG. The former Ligue 1 team was subsequently relegated to the fourth division of French football, Championnat National 2. As such they had to release all of their players and looked to make new signings to help them begin their comeback.

Carroll, who had been playing with Ligue 2 side Amiens, then joined Bordeaux on a free transfer after he was persuaded by sporting director John Williams, who has been assisting Bordeaux with recruitment in the wake of their double relegation. The 35-year-old scored a brace on his Bordeaux debut but has revealed that his term with the side is 'costing him money'.

Speaking to RMC Sport, Carroll said: "To be honest, it’s even costing me money to come and play for Bordeaux but I’m playing football and I am simply happy to be playing football.

"I want to be a part of this club’s history and to be frank, it wasn’t a question of money.

"In my career, it’s never been a question of money."

The former England striker has signed a two-year deal with Bordeaux until the summer of 2026 and will likely stay with the club at least until the end of his contract. He will take the field again when Bordeaux take on Olympique Saumur on Saturday, September 28.
