Nike release Barcelona 2023-24 home kit inspired by the 1971 women's team

Nike and Barcelona have released a unique kit for the 2023 -24 season and the club’s first to be inspired by the women’s team. It has the classic broad stripes in original blaugrana colours, but the star of the show is the club badge which is set into a diamond. The diamond represents the first women’s team to ever play a game of football at Camp Nou.

The back story to this diamond began in 1970, when Inma Cabeceran sent a letter to the then club president, Agustí Montal i Costa, proposing creating a women’s football team. This resulted in a behind-closed-doors women’s football match played at Camp Nou.

This game proved the spark for the first Barcelona women’s supporters club to be formed a year later in 1971, which used the club badge combined with a diamond for their logo. Years later, in 1988, the supporters’ club created the first women’s football team, wearing the same badge, even though they weren’t officially recognised as Barcelona's women’s team. They were finally formally recognised by the Club in 2002, along with the badge.

Since then, the Barcelona women's team have made their mark on football. They won the first Women’s Champions League (WCL) title in 2021, Ballon d'Or awards for Alexia Putellas, named the best player in the world, and the historic second WCL win this year has made them undoubtedly one of the best women's football teams in the world.
