Premier League's top transfer targets in Europe GFXGOAL

Victor Osimhen, Nico Williams and the 15 stars shining in Europe who look destined to join a Premier League club during the summer transfer window

While the eyes of most football fans are fixed on the business end of the 2024-25 season, some attention has already been drawn to the summer transfer window. Such is the nature of the modern game, which features and is fed by a rumour mill that never stops turning.

Only this week, we've had the revelation that Trent Alexander-Arnold is closing in on a summer switch to the Santiago Bernabeu, which has inevitably provoked heated debate - and not just on Merseyside or in Madrid.

However, while the loss of such an exciting footballer would represent a blow for the Premier League, the world's most popular championship is likely to attract plenty of other stars this summer, as the colossal money made from the sale of TV rights means its clubs will once again be in a position to plunder Europe's top teams for talent.

So, who will England's elite be targeting when the transfer window reopens? GOAL runs through the continent's most coveted players below...

    Xavi Simons

Manchester United expressed an interest in signing Xavi Simons last summer but the Dutchman wasn't interested in moving to England at the time, preferring instead to join RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain on a permanent basis. Things may be a little different now, though, with the versatile attacker said to be open to the idea of leaving the Red Bull Arena this summer.

United are still said to be keen (Liverpool have also been linked) but the word is that it would take around €80 million (£67m/$86m) to convince Leipzig to part company with a player who has contributed eight goals and six assists despite missing a couple of months of the current campaign with an ankle injury.

    Angel Gomes

Thomas Tuchel somewhat surprisingly left Angel Gomes out of his first England squad but the Manchester United academy graduate still has plenty of admirers in the Premier League, making a summer return increasingly likely.

The multi-talented midfielder is quite clearly running down his contract at Lille, which partly explains why he's been seeing less and less game time in recent weeks, and is exploring all of his options as he looks to make a lucrative free transfer this summer.

According to the latest reports, Gomes has already rejected one offer from West Ham and is also of interest to Tottenham. However, the name of Barcelona has also been bandied about, meaning it's by no means a given that the 24-year-old will end up back in England...

  • Moise Kean FiorentinaGetty Images

    Moise Kean

Moise Kean's time at Goodison Park did not go well. Everton paid Juventus £25m ($32m) for his services but the striker scored just two Premier League goals in 32 appearances.

However, Kean could well be set for a second spell in England having kickstarted his career at Fiorentina. The 25-year-old has scored 20 times in 34 appearances in all competitions this season, while he also struck twice in Italy's 3-3 draw with Germany on Sunday night.

Kean's remarkable revival has allegedly attracted the attention of West Ham, Newcastle and, most intriguingly of all, Arsenal, who are obviously desperately looking for a No.9 they can rely on. Whether Kean really fits the bill is very much open to debate but his situation is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

    Benjamin Sesko

The feeling was that the much-touted Benjamin Sesko would join one of Europe's elite clubs last summer. However, the Slovenia international ended up committing himself to RB Leipzig until 2029. Of course, that deal was done purely to ensure that the Germans make as much money as possible on Sesko when they sell him this year.

It must be said that the striker wasn't particularly impressive at Euro 2024 but, having already hit 17 goals in all competitions so far this season, it should only be a matter of days before he betters his previous haul for a single campaign (18).

Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich are said to be interested in signing Sesko to eventually take over up top from Harry Kane, but Premier League clubs are queueing up to sign him, with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, United and Liverpool all credited with interest in the 24-year-old.

  • FBL-EUR-C3-ATHLETIC BILBAO-ROMAAFP

    Nico Williams

For the majority of last summer, Nico Williams appeared bound for Barcelona. However, the Catalans never managed to rustle up the cash to sign the Spain international after rather bizarrely opting to spend what little existing money they had on Dani Olmo instead. The Blaugrana are now very likely to be left ruing their inability to get a deal done, as Williams appears to be edging closer to a move to England.

Chelsea and Liverpool have both previously expressed interest in signing the Athletic Club winger, but it is Arsenal who are now reportedly leading the race for Williams, who has a buyout clause in his contract that is reportedly set at somewhere between €60m (£50m/$65m) and €80m (£67m/$86m).

Let's see, though, if Barcelona are willing to give up the chase without a fight, while it's also been recently reported that Bayern Munich have now entered the fray too...

    Viktor Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres is almost certain to leave Sporting CP this summer. The only real doubt lies over where he will end up. Paris Saint-Germain have been linked in the past, while reports in Germany claim that the Sweden international is considered a potential long-term successor to Harry Kane at Bayern Munich.

The obvious destination is, of course, Old Trafford, where Gyokeres would be reunited with Ruben Amorim, who left Sporting in November to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager. Would such an in-demand No.9 be willing to make that move if the Red Devils don't qualify for the Champions League (via the Europa League)? It's hard to say but there's no doubt that United are crying out for a prolific goalscorer, with Amorim very clearly unimpressed with his current options up front.

Wherever he goes, though, it's likely Sporting will demand at least €70m fee for the 26-year-old, who has scored 40 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions this season, including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

    Martin Zubimendi

Martin Zubimendi's proposed move to Liverpool was one of the most engrossing dramas of last summer's window. The Reds new' sporting director, Richard Hughes, thought that he had lured the Spain international to Anfield and, thus, immediately solved the team's longstanding problem in midfield.

However, Real Sociedad managed to convince Zubimendi to stay in his native San Sebastian because of his deep-rooted ties to the Basque club, leaving Liverpool stunned. Zubimendi, though, apparently ended up regretting that decision and is expected to belatedly depart for pastures new at the end of the current campaign.

It was claimed in January that a summer switch to Arsenal was effectively a done deal and, according to the latest reports, the Gunners remain confident of completing the transfer. However, until Zubimendi actually signs on the dotted line nobody is taking anything for granted, especially as there's mounting speculation in Spain that he's had another change of heart and now favours a move to Real Madrid instead...

    Andrea Cambiaso

Juventus fans breathed a sign of relief when the winter window finally closed as they'd been fearing a deadline-day move to Manchester City for Andrea Cambiaso. At one point during January, the deal looked a formality. According to widespread reports, the Bianconeri were willing to cash in on Cambiaso in order to strengthen the squad elsewhere and that appears to have been the case.

However, no agreement was reached over the fee, with Juve said to be demanding somewhere in the region of €80m (£67m/$86m) for the Italy international. With City already committed to spending more than £175m ($225m) on signing four other players, they ultimately decided against meeting the asking price for Cambiaso.

This saga is far from over, though, as it's widely expected that City will return for the 24-year-old during the summer, with Pep Guardiola apparently feeling that the versatile left-back, who can also play on the right-hand side, can be a key component in City's revamped team. Could Liverpool, though, hijack the deal as the Reds look for a multi-talented replacement for Alexander-Arnold?...

  • Kasimpasa v Galatasaray - Turkish Super LeagueGetty Images Sport

    Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen was arguably the biggest loser of the 2024 summer transfer window. The Nigeria international was meant to join one of Europe's elite clubs. He was linked with Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and even Real Madrid. Instead, he ended up at Galatasaray, a great club but not exactly the destination Osimhen had in mind when he decided to leave Napoli.

He's only in Istanbul on loan until the end of the season, though, so the question now is, what will happen this summer?

Osimhen is clearly too good to stay in Turkey. He's netted 20 goals in 22 Super Lig outings for Gala, who simply cannot afford to try to keep him. A move to Chelsea, thus, seems a real possibility.

The Blues went closer than any other elite European team to signing Osimhen on a permanent basis last year and are widely expected to try again, while Manchester United are also said to be in the running as they look for a No.9 they can rely on. What's more, PSG and Madrid appear to have other priorities right now, making a Premier League move for Osimhen all the more likely.

  • Dusan VlahovicGetty Images Sport

    Dusan Vlahovic

It wouldn't have been a huge surprise to see Dusan Vlahovic leave Juventus during the January transfer window. He was Juve's top scorer (and still is!) but it was clear that coach Thiago Motta wasn't convinced that the Serbian was the right kind of striker to lead his attack. So, when Randal Kolo Muani arrived from PSG and made a sensational start to his Serie A career, Vlahovic's days appeared to be numbered.

However, Motta was sacked during the international break and replaced at the helm by Igor Tudor, who reportedly holds Vlahovic in much higher esteem. Consequently, the jury is very much out here.

Vlahovic obviously has a chance to resurrect his Juve career under Tudor but we know he has plenty of fans in England, with Arsenal said to be among the Premier League clubs open to making a move for the 25-year-old if he's made available for a reasonable price.

  • VfB Stuttgart v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - BundesligaGetty Images Sport

    Jeremie Frimpong

With Trent Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid now looking like a formality, attention at Anfield has already switched to who could replace the England international as Liverpool's first-choice right-back.

Conor Bradley is the obvious in-house solution to a pretty big problem for the Reds, as the talented and tenacious 21-year-old Irishman has already served notice of his world-class potential.

However, Jeremie Frimpong is also a strong contender. The Dutchman, who nearly joined Liverpool as a youngster and does a pretty decent Scouse accent, has played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen's historic exploits under Xabi Alonso with his rampaging runs down the right wing.

The Netherlands international still has three years left on his contract and would not come cheap, but the feeling in Germany is that Frimpong, at 24, is very open to the idea of joining compatriots such as Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch on Merseyside.

  • FBL-FRA-LIGUE1-ANGERS-LYONAFP

    Rayan Cherki

Rayan Cherki has been tipped to move to one of Europe's top clubs since bursting onto the scene as a 16-year-old back in late-2019 and it looks like it's finally going to happen.

The versatile No.10, who is still only 21, has just over 14 months left on his contract with Lyon and the Ligue 1 outfit would obviously prefer to cash on their academy product this summer rather than lose him for nothing in 2026.

Liverpool are reportedly ready to offer Cherki, who has 18 assists in all competitions, the opportunity to prove himself at the very highest level that he has long craved, although they could face a fight for his signature from German duo Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

  • Juventus v Atalanta - Serie AGetty Images Sport

    Ademola Lookman

For an awfully long time, Premier League followers would have mainly associated Ademola Lookman with an infamous 'Panenka' penalty for Fulham during the 2020-21 season. However, an awful lot has changed in the interim, with the Nigeria international having since established himself as one of the most feared forwards in Serie A and written himself into the history books with his stunning hat-trick for Atalanta in last year's Europa League final win over Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin.

Lookman looked to leave Bergamo shortly after that momentous occasion in Dublin but La Dea refused to let him leave. A parting of the ways now seems inevitable, though, with the 27-year-old no longer on the best of terms with coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who rather unwisely criticised Lookman's penalty-taking skills after a recent miss against Club Brugge.

In truth, though, this just feels like the end of his cycle in Serie A and both Newcastle and Manchester United are reportedly eager to snap up Lookman, who has 18 goals and six assists in all competitions this season.

  • AFC Ajax v Eintracht Frankfurt - UEFA Europa League 2024/25 Round of 16 First LegGetty Images Sport

    Jorell Hato

Arsenal are probably already regretting failing to get a deal done for Jorrel Hato last summer. The Ajax defender's value has only increased during the current campaign, with Hato having locked down a spot in Ronald Koeman's Netherlands squad.

The Gunners, who are still hoping to sign the 19-year-old, also have another problem: Hato's performances have attracted the attention of several other clubs, including Liverpool, who reportedly view the versatile left-back as a potential successor to Andy Robertson.

So, while Hato signed a new contract after spurning Arsenal's advances last year, the chances are that we'll be seeing him in the Premier League next season...

  • Rafael Leao Milan Parma 26012025Getty Images

    Rafael Leao

Rafael Leao is one of the more curious players in world football. The Portuguese appears to have it all - he's tall, strong, skilful and fast - and when he's on top form, he's almost unstoppable.

However, Leao is also frustratingly inconsistent. He's got 10 goals and nine assists for AC Milan this season but it's hard to shake the feeling that he should have so many more, given his natural talent.

Therefore, it shouldn't come as too much of a shock to learn that the struggling Rossoneri, who are at real risk of failing to qualify for next season's Champions League, are allegedly open to cashing in on a player that they had previously intended to build a new winning project around.

Barcelona rate Leao highly but one wonders if they really have the cash required to make a deal happen. Chelsea rather inexplicably do and love nothing more than signing wide players, so rumours are rife that the 25-year-old is going to end up at Stamford Bridge.

  • TOPSHOT-FBL-EUR-C1-DORTMUND-LILLEAFP

    Jonathan David

Jonathan David is one of the most intriguing names on the transfer market right now. The Canada international, who was integral to Lille sensationally progressing directly to the last 16 of the Champions League, is out of contract at the end of the season and being tipped to join a different team every other day.

It's easy to understand why. He's scored more than 100 goals for Lille in just over four-and-a-half seasons at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy and it's rare that such a quality forward becomes available for nothing.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have all been linked with the 25-year-old. However, Juventus and Bayern Munich are also reportedly keen, while it's also worth noting that he's gone on record saying that Barcelona would be his dream move.

  • Eintracht Frankfurt, EkitikeGetty

    Hugo Ekitike

With Newcastle unlikely to accept anything less than a nine-figure fee for the in-demand Alexander Isak, it's now being claimed that some of the Swede's suitors are looking at a very attractive cut-price alternative.

Hugo Ekitike is provoking an awful lot of comparisons to the Magpies hitman because of his slender frame and explosive style of play. The 22-year-old has certainly taken his game to a whole other level since leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Eintracht Frankfurt and, after forming a formidable forward partnership with Omar Marmoush at Deutsche Bank Park, he's now flourishing as a lone striker.

Arsenal and Liverpool are among the Premier League sides said to be mulling over switching their attention from Isak to Ekitike this summer.
