Bruno Guimaraes faces weeks on the sidelines as Arsenal suffer major injury blow at the start of the season

  • A major setback for the club

Arsenal are facing a major midfield dilemma after learning that Guimaraes could be sidelined for an extended period. As reported by The Telegraph, the midfielder may be out for a few weeks with an unspecified injury.

Guimaraes recently completed a £75m move from Newcastle United and made his debut during the 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City on Sunday. However, he was brought off for the second half of that match. The untimely injury comes as a massive blow to the club just hours before they kick off their domestic campaign against Coventry City tonight.

    Missing crucial Premier League encounters

During his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Arteta was asked about the condition of Guimaraes following his substitution at the weekend. The manager initially remained coy, stating: "Let's see how he is. He's evolving really well, but let's see for tomorrow."

However, during a pre-match interview with Sky Sports, Arteta explained exactly why the Brazil international was left out. The Spaniard said: "He had a slight tension in his groin, he hasn't done a pre-season. He had only four or five days before that game (Community Shield). It is a lot of new stuff for him as well, and we need to take it bit-by-bit." Consequently, the extended layoff means the midfielder is set to miss the Coventry clash tonight, alongside upcoming domestic tests against Aston Villa, Chelsea and possibly Sunderland.

Consequently, the extended layoff means the midfielder is set to miss the Coventry clash tonight, alongside upcoming domestic tests against Aston Villa, Chelsea and possibly Sunderland. The club have a congested fixture list approaching, with their Champions League league phase campaign commencing on either September 8, 9 or 10. Their opening European match falls between those Chelsea and Sunderland fixtures. With Guimaraes unavailable, Declan Rice could be involved from the start after replacing him on Sunday. Additionally, Arteta has Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi as options, while Myles Lewis-Skelly might also be in line to start.

    What is next for Arsenal?

Arsenal will now need to rely on their squad depth to navigate this challenging early-season period without their marquee summer addition. Following the Coventry fixture tonight, the focus will shift to maintaining domestic consistency while integrating the available midfield options before the first international break. The club must ensure this injury does not derail their early-season ambitions.
