Wilshere: Wide role not my best position

Jack Wilshere says he is unsure of his most effective position on the pitch - but believes it is definitely not out wide.

The Arsenal midfielder stepped up his return from injury by playing 66 minutes of England's pre-Euro 2016 friendly victory over Turkey on Sunday.

Wilshere started only one league match last season but was still included in Roy Hodgson's England squad despite his lack of game time, and the 24-year-old revealed he's still undecided on his best position.

“I’m not sure," said Wilshere.

"With Arsenal I’ve been playing out wide, which is not me.

"I’m not a wide man, but Roy seems to have faith in me in the middle, so I’m happy with that and I like to play anywhere in the middle.

"I played the holding role before and I really enjoy that, and, today [Sunday], I was a bit higher up the pitch and I enjoyed that.”

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is ready to offer Wilshere a contract extension this summer, with Manchester City interested in bringing him to the Etihad Stadium. However, the player himself is firmly focused on the upcoming European Championship in France.

“I’m very excited, we’ve only been together for four days, the whole squad isn’t even together yet. It was a tough game today and there will be games like that in the Euros where we will be leading and teams are going to need to try to get a goal back. We’re happy today, but we know we can do better.”
