Gui Finkler keen on A-League return

Former Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix midfielder Gui Finkler appears to have unfinished business in the A-League.

After ending his time at Wellington prematurely due to a dispute with then coach Darije Kalezic, Finkler now finds himself back home in Brazil playing for his first professional club Juventude.

While a potentially romantic way to end his playing career, the 32-year-old remains open to a return to the competition he won in 2015 with Victory.

"Yes definitely, I really love my time in the A-League and my family love it as well," Finkler told Goal Australia when asked about a possible return.

"The last couple of months I can say I wasn’t enjoying myself but I’m still hungry to play in a good level and I know I can still deliver."

Finkler joined Juventude's youth team in 2000 before debuting for the senior team as a fresh-faced 20-year-old and admits his return there is special.

"I’m back in Brazil right now playing at Juventude, the club where I started my career so it’s a good feeling coming back," he said.

'This club is a huge part of the player I am today!"

After a career spent mainly in Brazil but did include a short loan with Wolverhampton, Finkler joined Victory in 2012 and became a fan favourite as he helped them to a historic treble in 2014/15 which saw them win the FFA Cup, Premiership and Championship.

In 2016, the Brazilian was lured to Wellington by then coach Ernie Merrick and while the move would end poorly, Finkler didn't make the decision to cross the ditch lightly.

"They're two very different sides," he said.

"At that time it was tough decision to leave the club that I started my career in Australia and the club was great for me as well as the fans.

"When I arrived in Wellington I knew the challenge and Ernie was great for me as he explained to me how the club worked even before I signed the contract and the players at that time really helped me to adapt quickly."

Finkler ultimately made 28 appearances for the Phoenix scoring seven goals across a difficult time for the club which saw Merrick depart midway through last season.
