VAR overshadows Sydney FC derby win as Markus Babbel sees red

Western Sydney Wanderers coach Markus Babbel was shown a straight red card during his side's 2-0 defeat to Sydney FC as VAR once again stole the headlines. 

Having lost just one of the past 13 derbies, Sydney FC got off to a fast start with Adam Le Fondre putting the Sky Blues ahead inside four minutes.

The English striker forced a fine initial save from Vedran Janjetovic after having the ball break for him after a free-kick before finding the back of the net on the rebound.

Slow off the mark, Western Sydney's first big chance came in the 19th minute when Oriol Riera fired wide after a fast break.

The Wanderers should then really have pulled level in the 32nd minute with Roly Bonevacia pulling his effort high with the goal at his mercy after an Andrew Redmayne clearance fell straight to the winger.

After the break, Sydney FC would again strike not long after kick-off with Alex Brosque this time putting his side 2-0 up.

Western Sydney defender Josh Risdon passing it straight to Milos Ninkovic, who in turn picked out his skipper with Brosque able to power it past Janjetovic on an angle. 

The Wanderers thought they had found a lifeline on the hour mark when Bonevacia swept the ball past Redmayne from distance only for VAR intervention to see it overturned for a questionable foul in the build-up.

Babbel was left incensed by the decision with his angry reaction seeing him sent to the stands for the remainder of the match.

Without their coach looking on, Western Sydney kept pushing for a goal but the woodwork and a late offside call would deny them any such consolation as Sydney FC held firm for a 2-0 win.

The Sydney FC striker is settling in quickly Down Under and has now scored in both his A-League games to date.

His side showed some real fight but a sucker punch from the VAR left him floored and the German coach can be excused for his angry reaction.
