Sergio Ramos sets La Liga red card record

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos was sent off late in a 0-0 draw with Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, making him the most red-carded player in the history of La Liga.

The sending off, given after his second yellow of the night for an elbow on Aritz Aduriz, was the 19th time the Spanish defender has been shown red in league play, taking him one clear of Xavi Aguado and Pablo Alfaro, who have both been sent of 18 times.

While the red card didn't do much to change the match for Madrid, who let a golden chance to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona slip after Ernesto Valverde's side were held by Celta earlier in the day, it will rule Ramos out for next week's crunch clash against Sevilla.

Misfiring Madrid have now earned their fewest points through 14 matchdays in nearly a decade, with just 28 of the 42 on offer picked up.

While Los Blancos have certainly not been at their best, Barca's result leaves them just eight points back of their rivals.

The two will meet two days before Christmas in what will be a vital match for Zinedine Zidane's side if they are to have any chance at retaining their league crown.
