Monterrey coach Antonio Mohamed is expecting to sign a contract to stay with Rayados, he told reporters Thursday.

The Argentine's future with the club had been the subject of much speculation with his current deal set to expire at the end of the Clausura. But Mohmaed said he expects to come to terms with the club sooner rather than later on a two-year extension.

"We're on a good path. We're really close," Mohamed said of contract negotiations. "There's almost an agreement to continue, and I'm very happy about it. Very happy that the club is putting its faith in me."

The 47-year-old won league titles at both of his previous stops in Mexico, winning the 2012 Apertura with Club Tijuana and the 2014 Apertura at Club America. But he hasn't been able to do the same with Rayados, falling to Pachuca in the final of the 2016 Clausura after finishing the season as the top team.

While Mohamed is aware the club's fans and directors wish to see him lead Monterrey to its first Liga MX crown since 2010, he said the results of the ongoing tournament have little to do with his future at the club.

"It doesn't depend on a final result," he said. "The team is going to have changes, it's going to make signings, it's going to look for alternatives in some places, not a lot but it doesn't depend on if it is or isn't champion."

Monterrey currently sits second in the league table, a point behind Tijuana, and this week travels to face relegation-threatened Veracruz.
