Mamelodi Sundowns target Phakamani Mahlambi faces bleak future at Al Ahly

South Africa international Phakamani Mahlambi's future remains uncertain after the player was not registered by Al Ahly for the upcoming campaign.

There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks surrounding the future of Mahlambi after it was reported that Al Ahly had exhausted their foreign quota.

Reports doing the rounds have suggested that the player may be considering a return to South Africa with Mamelodi Sundowns seen as the frontrunners to sign him.

However, with a new coach at the helm of the Egyptian giant in Patrice Carteron, it was believed that the Frenchman would first take a good look at the 20-year-old before making a decision on his future.

Nonetheless, it has since been confirmed by Mahlambi’s agent, Glyn Binkin, that the talented player has not been registered as yet.

Speaking to Goal on Monday, Binkin explained that although it would be premature to make a complete judgment, he would be jetting off to Egypt to gain more clarity on the matter.

Meanwhile, there has been talk on social media that if Mahlambi is not registered by August 1, the Egyptian giants would lose the player on a free.

This has subsequently been dispelled by the player’s agent, who stated that Mahlambi still has many years left on his current contract with the club.

“That is not true. He has a four-year-contract with the club,” Binkin explained to Goal.

Al Ahly’s recent decision has led to an influx of talk surrounding Mahlambi and his next port of call, and Binkin was coy when questioned regarding a potential loan move to the Tshwane giants.

“Yeah, there is a lot of interest in the player. The important thing is to understand from Al Ahly what the plans for the player are,” Binkin explained.

Sundowns most recently parted ways with Percy Tau, who joined English Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion and the Brazilians are believed to have singled Mahlambi out as a possible replacement.
