Matchday LIVE: Champions League quarter final first legs as Man City host Atletico and Benfica face Liverpool

<p>There's the final whistle in Portugal too - and Liverpool are going to take some chasing at Anfield to stop them making the semi-finals too.</p><p>They are on top in the Champions League quarter-finals after putting three goals past Benfica in the latter's backyard.</p><p>Luis Diaz's late finish caps the match and puts them firmly in the driving seat.</p>

<p>There's the final whistle at the Etihad Stadium - and Manchester City have emerged on top, in the end!</p><p>The Citizens have been made to work for it, frustrated by an Atletico Madrid side determined to restrict their chances despite their possession.</p><p>But in the end, Phil Foden threaded the needle for Kevin De Bruyne. The Premier League side will be favourites heading to Wanda Metropolitano next week.</p>

<p>The Citizens have their breakthrough!</p><p>Kevin De Bruyne, as he so often has done, rises to the occasion for Manchester City to put them in the lead of this Champions League quarter-final!</p><p>The Belgian is fed by the newly arrived Phil Foden into the box on the right flank and slashes a low finish across goal to nestle at the left post.</p>

Foden shows superb spark

<p>Pep Guardiola has the advantage ahead of Manchester City's second leg next week, but he's told <em>BT Sport </em>that they will head to Madrid to win rather than draw, adding: "We played an incredible top side who are difficult to face but it is a good result. We had chances to score a second and third.</p><p>"The guys were playing well but with Gabriel [Jesus] coming inside it gives us special energy and with Jack to keep the ball and the manager is so clever. When we make a sub it is because we think it can be a bit better. It works sometimes but other times it doesn't.</p><p>"It is not easy to face a team with a lot of experience in this tournament. We will go there to score and try and win again."</p>

Reds muted in victory

<p>Andy Robertson was the focal point of some displeasure from the Benfica crowd today, and he has weighed in on that and the performance, telling <em>BT Sport</em>: "It was a tough game, on top first half and could have gone in a couple more up, then we wanted to keep it tight but they got a goal which lifted the crowd and we got a bit sloppy. The third goal was big.</p><p>"He [Luis Diaz] got a nice reception from the start, playing for one of their rivals, but a good goal for him and a two-goal cushion makes a difference. Hopefully we can get the job done.</p><p>"I got quite a few lighters thrown at me [taking the corner], maybe it will stop them smoking - so take the postives from it. But you should try not to throw things on the pitch because it can hurt people, luckily none hit me."</p>

Robertson calls out crowd action

<p>Kevin De Bruyne is the hero of the hour for Manchester City, and he's been telling <em>BT Sport </em>about his finish, stating: "The first half was tight in the second half we had a couple of chances and it was good that we took one.</p><p>"I made the run and Phil [Foden] found me perfectly, I needed to stay composed and luckily I did. It's very hard. They played with almost five at the back and with five in midfield. I recommend anyone that says anything [about us], that they try playing against that on the training ground."</p><p>"We have to stay composed and don’t try to get into their action. It is the way they play. One nil is one nil. I expect similar over there. If the game is tight they will have to attack a little bit more."</p>

<p>The whistles go in Portugal and England - and that will be half-time in the Champions League quarter-finals!</p><p>There's one clear winner so far today, and it is Liverpool, who hold a healthy two-goal cushion on the road against Benfica.</p><p>For Manchester City, matters are trickier, with their attempts to pry open Atletico Madrid left frustrate, despite the fact it has been a very quiet game from their visitors - but both teams are packing some serious reinforcements if needed.</p>
