ISL 2017-18: Mumbai City FC’s Alexandre Guimaraes – Still trying to establish a pattern of playing

2018 hasn’t been a good year for Mumbai City FC as they have picked just a single point in their last three matches in the Indian Super League (ISL). On Sunday evening, they face FC Goa, a team they had defeated earlier in the season and coach Alexandre Guimaraes wants his players to produce their best game as they look to climb up the ISL table.

Mumbai are placed sixth with 14 points to show for from 11 matches. Guimaraes believes that all the participants have an opportunity to qualify for the play-offs.

“We were one of the teams to beat Goa in first leg. They have been doing well and the league table shows that. We controlled them more or less in the previous meeting and we hope to do the same.

“All the teams still have chance to go into the top four. There have been not too many draws and therefore  more teams are in a position to qualify for play-offs. We still are in the bottom half but we have too many games in hand and so there is a fair chance for us. 

“After the Goa game, we have two games at home and before we go to Delhi. If we get some positive results, we will be back in contention. Tomorrow (Sunday) is an opportunity to get three points and let's see what happens,” said the experienced coach.

He pointed that Mumbai have had injury concerns which has to an extent halted Guimaraes’ plans for the season.

“We have had our fair share of injuries. Still we have been trying to establish a pattern of playing. But sometimes the points accumulated do not reflect that. We have two players who are not match ready. I have a meeting with the doctor in the evening and will take a call tomorrow morning.”
