Danny Ings admits he “will miss” Liverpool, but claims he had to leave for Southampton in order to feel important again and fulfil his England ambitions.

The 26-year-old forward was offered the chance to stay at Anfield over the summer, with Jurgen Klopp happy for him to remain part of the Reds’ plans.

A man who had seen his time on Merseyside ravaged by injury was, however, to take the decision to head back to his roots.

Ings has enjoyed a positive start to life at Southampton, netting three times in five appearances, and believes he made the right call in walking out on a Premier League giant.

He told the Daily Mail: “There is a part of me that will miss them, as Liverpool is a club of such magnitude.

“I was part of a squad that reached the Champions League final last year. But the feeling [of being important] is something I’ve craved for a long time.

“I want to show people what I can do again.”

Prior to enduring a succession of serious knee injuries, Ings had offered enough to force himself in the senior England squad.

He was handed a debut at that level by Roy Hodgson in October 2015, but has failed to add to that solitary appearance.

There is a determination on his part to avoid being a member of England’s one-cap club, with it now down to him to rediscover the form which first brought him to the attention of Liverpool and the Three Lions.

Ings said: “There are a lot of unbelievable footballers in this country.

“They did so well in the World Cup and have really come on under Gareth [Southgate], so it is going to be difficult to ever make a squad again. If one day it happens, I’ll be over the moon. That will almost feel like a great comeback story.

“I don’t want to be a guy that has got one cap.

“I have had lots of hurdles to overcome and now feel I’ve got over the last hurdle. I’m just working as hard as I can now to try and get another moment someday. Hopefully one day it will happen. I’m back in a happy place.”
