Gor Mahia 2-0 Simba SC: K’Ogalo book date with Everton after Super Cup win

Gor Mahia completed a double against Simba SC to book a second date with Everton after a 2-0 in the Super Cup final on Sunday.

Rwandan duo Meddie Kagere and compatriot Jacques Tuyisenge did the damage with a goal in either half to hand K’Ogalo the bragging rights and a ticket to England to face the Toffees.

The last time the two sides from East Africa region met was 37 years ago at City Stadium where K’Ogalo piped Simba by a solitary goal in the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.

This was not just a match to determine, who lift the Sh3million and a ticket to play Everton, but rather a bragging right of sort and a chance for coach Dylan Kerr to prove a point to his former employers, Simba.

Kerr was unceremoniously fired by Simba in 2016 just six months after signing for the Tanzanian giants. Kagere shot K’Ogalo into the lead with his fourth goal of the tournament from a strong left-foot shot and the ball was too heavy for Simba custodian Aishi Manula.

Kagere’s opener in the 5th minute was the tournament’s second fastest goal after Wycliffe Opondo’s fourth minute strike for Kakamega Homeboyz against Singida United.

Gor Mahia started the move with Francis Kahata breaking Simba’s defence with a split pass to Jacques Tuyisenge whose cross from the right fell on Kagere.

The Rwandan striker controlled the ball with his right foot, turned to his weaker foot before unleashing a rocket shot that gave experienced Manula very little time to think as he watched the ball roll into his own net for a 1-0 lead.

George Odhiambo forced Manula to a save with a well-taken free-kick but the experienced Tanzanian number one quelled the danger. Kahata came close to doubling Gor Mahia’s lead with a minute left to the break but the midfielder failed to direct his shot on target after he was set free by Godfrey Walusimbi.         

Tuyisenge sent Afraha Stadium into a deafening frenzy 10 minutes after the resumption with K’Ogalo’s second goal after the Rwandan star sneaked past the defence to fire past Manula.

Tuyisenge was set by Humphrey Mieno, who floated a cross inside the box only for the goal poacher to pounce on the ball with a fine connection past Manula.

Simba survived Gor Mahia scare in the 74th minute after Tuyisenge failed to make contact with a well-cut cross by Kahata. Gor Mahia will take on Everton at Goodison Park having played the side in 2017 in Dar es Salaam.
