Perry Kitchen has completed his return to Major League Soccer.
The former D.C. United midfielder, who had spent the previous two years in Europe, has signed with the LA Galaxy, the MLS side announced Tuesday.
The Galaxy sent $100,000 in general allocation money (GAM) and $200,000 in targeted allocation money (TAM) to DCU to acquire Kitchen’s MLS rights.
Terms of his contract were not disclosed, but the Galaxy did reveal they used more TAM to complete the signing.
“Perry has proven himself to be a top midfielder in Major League Soccer during his time with D.C. United,” Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid said in a statement. “He has continued to progress during his time in Europe and we are confident he can bolster our midfield. At only 25 years old, Perry is already an MLS veteran and will be a great addition to the LA Galaxy on and off the field.”
The third overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, Kitchen had a successful run with D.C. United which included 158 appearances for the club and being part of a 2013 U.S. Open Cup-winning side.
Kitchen left on free transfer after the 2015 MLS campaign, joining Heart of Midlothian in the Scottish Premiership. His initial time with Hearts was a success, with Kitchen earning the club captain role in his first season.
However he eventually fell out of favor at Hearts and moved on to Randers FC in Denmark last July. He would go on to make 17 appearances for Randers, all of them starts.
Kitchen also has made five appearances for the senior United States national team, with his last cap coming in October 2016.
Because D.C. United did not receive a transfer fee for Kitchen when he departed for Europe, the club still maintained his rights, meaning any other MLS side that hoped to acquire him had to agree to compensation with DCU.
