The Paris Saint-Germain striker has already beaten his previous best in Ligue 1 after netting another two goals against Nantes on Saturday

Edinson Cavani has become the first player in Europe's top five leagues to score 20 goals this season.

The Uruguayan netted twice to lead Paris Saint-Germain to victory against Nantes on Saturday, meaning he has now struck 20 times in just 18 games in Ligue 1.

That leaves him well clear of the competition, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations - four goals behind him on 16.

Among players with at least 10 goals this season, Cavani's rate of 74 minutes per goal scored is better only by Monaco's Falcao, who has netted once every 71 minutes in 2016-17.

In Serie A, Mauro Icardi leads the way with 15 goals in 20 games for Inter, while Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette is the fourth player to hit the 15-goal milestone.

Barcelona duo Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi both have 14 goals in La Liga, as does Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga.

There is a three-way tie in the scoring race on 14 goals in the Premier League, meanwhile, between Alexis Sanchez, Diego Costa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

This is the first season in which Cavani has scored 20 goals in Ligue 1, beating the tallies of 16, 18 and 19 he has recorded in his previous three seasons with PSG.

The most prolific league campaign of his career came in 2012-13 with Napoli, during which he notched 29 goals in Serie A and was snapped up by the Parisians for around €64 million.
