Asian Games 2018: India U23 football team to prepare in Australia with three warm-up games

The Indian U-23 side is all set to take part in the Asian Cup 2018 in Indonesia which starts from August. The football team was given the green signal by the Indian Government on June 7 to take part in the competition.

Goal can confirm that as preparation for the Asian Cup, Stephen Constantine’s men will undergo a preparation camp in New Delhi from 14 July. After that they are scheduled to travel to Australia where they will play three practice matches.

India will be facing a couple of A-League clubs and either one of the Socceroos' U-20 or U-23 side. They will directly travel to Indonesia from Down Under to take part in the Asian Games.

India’s record in the last three Asian Games have not been up to the mark. In 2006 and 2010 they finished fourteenth and managed to win just a game in both the editions. Their performance worsened in 2014 when they finished 26th among 29 teams and were eliminated from the group after losing to UAE and Jordan.

The scenario though has changed quite a bit and India are now ranked among the top 100 nations in the FIFA rankings. They will be taking part in the AFC Asian Cup 2019 which starts in January. Stephen Constantine will look forward to Asian Games as a part of their preparation for the Asian Cup.

The senior Indian side is currently playing in the Intercontinental Cup 2018. After winning the first two matches against Chinese Taipei and Kenya convincingly, they suffered a 1-2 defeat against New Zealand.
