Why Vinicius Jr was left disappointed by Spain vs Brazil anti-racism friendly, with no money donated to charity - explained

The international friendly at the Santiago Bernabeu was billed as a showing of unity and a statement against racism following the many incidents of abuse aimed at Vinicius during his time at Real Madrid. Brazil players wore shirts with the slogans “One Identity” and “One Skin” when they walked out of the tunnel, and the day before the match there were photos promoting the mottos with Vinicius posing alongside Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Rodrygo.

However, The Athletic reports that Vinicius was not impressed by the Spanish Football Federation's (RFEF) lack of action around the game. Both the RFEF and Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) expected to earn around €5 million (£4m/$5m) from the match, but none of that will be donated to charity.

Vinicius has been in a long battle against racism in Spain that has seen him enter a war of words with La Liga president Javier Tebas after declaring that the country's top flight "belongs to racists". The 23-year-old winger broke down in tears at a press conference ahead of the game when he was asked about the racist abuse he has suffered.

Vinicius will attempt to shake off his reported disappointment and turn his focus back to club football. Real Madrid, who are eight points clear at the top of La Liga, will face fourth-placed Athletic Club on Sunday.
